Erno Rubik and his Rubiks Cube

Erno Rubik is the man behind all thing Rubiks. He was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1944 and grew up to become an architect, designer and university professor. At 3o years of age, Rubik created the first working prototype of the cube. This year, 1974, is the official birth date of the world’s favourite toy. One year later Rubik patents the ‘Magic Cube’ and the Hungarian toy-manufacturer Politechnika began the overwhelming task of mass-production. The first Magic Cube to be sold in the shops in Hungary didn’t happen until 1977, but it was 3 years later when it really took hold.
In 1980. the Ideal Toy Corporation began exporting the cube from Hungary. One of the biggest moves however was not the fact that the cubes were finding there ways into countries around the world but more the fact that The ‘Magic Cube’ was renamed, the ‘Rubik’s Cube’ was in the building. Sales of the Rubiks Cube didn’t disappoint. With so many cubes in circulation a young boy used his entrepreneurial skills to write a publication entitled ‘You Can Do the Cube’. Patrick Bossert, a 12-year-old schoolboy from England could never have dreamed what was to follow with his book going on to sell 1.5 million copies.
It’s now 1982 and over 100 million cubes have been sold worldwide, the first annual International Rubik’s Championships are held in Budapest and Rubik’s enters the Oxford English Dictionary. Cube sales continue to escalate and in 2005 the Rubik’s Cube celebrates it’s 25th birthday on the 26th July with a special, limited edition Rubik’s Cube being produced to mark this occasion.
With over 350,000,000 cubes having been sold since it introduction in 1980, Rubiks have raised the bar and brought the Rubiks Puzzles into the 21st century.
With Erno Rubik now enjoying his retirement, the Rubik’s Studio continues to design games and work with young designers in Hungary and beyond, hence the birth of the Rubiks 360.

Countdown to the Rubik's 360 begins
Online attention has turned to Rubik’s hype following the recent unveiling of the Rubik’s 360. Visitors to the recent Toy fair in Germany were privileged to experience the birth of the next toy phenomena. Seven Towns who have sole distribution rights on all of the Rubik’s products were there in force. The anticipation of such a huge advance in the world of Rubik’s Puzzles was massive and once revealed was no disappointment. If the early signs and reactions are anything to go by then the Rubik’s 360 is going to be more than a fair match for it’s predecessor the Cube.
Reports on Rubik’s latest brainteaser has hit the papers, brief reviews can be found on the well known gadget sites and the first few videos of the Rubiks 360 have hit YouTube, including the one we have featured on our site. All this adds to the 360 going viral as we put it in our title.
If like me, and, if you are older enough to remember, you will have been waiting for this day for a long time. I remember being at Primary School and all the kids talking about this amazing new puzzle. What the &*^% was a Rubik’s Cube? Well maybe not ‘&*^%’ as I was still at Primary School, and, I had only just learnt what a cube was. But despite this I still wanted one. It is this type of desire of those that have had the pleasure of owning one and the satisfaction for those that solved it, that is making the new kid on the block in the guise of the 360 one of the biggest anticpated launches of a puzzle toy since that of the original. It is this buzz along with the power of the internet that is going to make this, and I predict, the biggest selling toy in history!
Most things that go viral turn out to be big. The Rubik’s 360 is going viral, but it’s not going to be big, it’s going to be huge.

Rubik's 360 - The Ultimate Strategy Puzzle
After almost 30 years since the UK opened up it’s minds to the original Rubik’s Cube, Erno Rubik, it’s inventor is launching it’s replacement. Having sold over 350,000,000 cubes world wide, the original concept of the cube has come full circle. The result….. Rubik’s 360.
The Rubik’s 360 was recently unveiled on the Feb 5th, 2009 at the Nuremberg International Toy Fair and to say that it has caused a stir, is somewhat of an understatement. The inital response from the toy industry is one of excitement. The Rubik’s 360 is going to be huge! The six colours, known by so many, has been adopted from the original Cube in keeping with all Rubik’s puzzles but that is where any similarities stop. The 360 is unique in design and concept and will have many search for it’s one single solution. Back in the 80’s there was no internet. The Rubik’s Cube solution was shared by books and magazines. Thirty years on, we have the internet, and solutions can be found just by one simple search on the search engine of your choice. The result being numerous pdf’s and video tutorials on how to solve the Rubik’s Cube.
So will this effect the love affair that people will develop with the Rubik’s 360? Not a chance, even if solutions are made readily available, there is still the element of physical skill and undertsanding of the physics still to overcome for any soluton to be put into practice.
The Rubik’s 360 is due for a worldwide release this Summer (2009) and further detals of this will be posted to our site as and when this information becomes available. To keep yourself updated then sign up to our updates.
